EQA Manual
on Accessibility

This is the Twenty First century, and thanks to the work of many organizations around the world, much is being done to make the plight of the Physically Disabled easier to bear. This is "good news" for all those with physical disabilities. Unfortunately not everything that has been, and is being done for their benefit is as effective as it could be.. For the most part, here in Canada, guidelines for "Accessibility" developed by various organizations such as Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation(C.M.H.C),. and the Barrier Free Design Center, are accurate. If people would follow these guidelines, or those of numerous other such "bodies", the mobility problems of disabled people would be much improved.. Accessibility however, depends on another equally important, often overlooked factor.

Many people who spend their money to provide accessibility aids, do so without first understanding the total picture. They fail to consult the true experts (the Physically Disabled) before they begin. Consequently, they often leave out important details. Their omissions often result in a project that should have been highly satisfactory, becoming something that is at best adequate, and at worst, virtually useless. EQA's mandate is to teach people the true accessibility needs of the physically disabled.. EQA. believes that if consulted first, about what is really needed, before an Accessibility project is undertaken, it will have a better chance of being successful. It usually doesn't cost any more to do a job right.

EQA has developed this manual which provides the ideal guidelines for accessibility. If it is followed accurately and completely, then quality accessibility can be assured. Each section can be accessed and printed individually. Read carefully and pay close attention to the details and drawings.

EQA is aware that many buildings, for various reasons, can prove difficult or impossible to be made totally accessible for everyone. There are however many things that can be done that will at least improve a situation. Adequate stair railings will make a tremendous difference to everyone, including people with disabilities.

EQA. will be pleased to offer advice, and work with any person or group updating their premises for accessibility. We will asssist in finding the most economical and efficient ways of providing accessibility changes. EQA.'s goal is to "level the playing field" to allow people with physical disabilities to function as close to normal as possible. Making that happen often requires using methods that could seem totally unnecessary to a lot of people, so they (the methods) are easily overlooked. EQA believes that understanding the problem is halfway toward finding the solution.

This Manual is dedicated to Physically Disabled People everywhere who appreciate all the efforts that have been exerted on their behalf. The information provided has been carefully gathered, and should be useful. From time to time, accessibility criteria can change. If and when that happens, the manual will be updated accordingly. Constructive input from any individuals on improvements to the manual will always be welcomed and considered. Access to this manual is provided at no cost to any organization or individual who is attempting to perform accessibility changes. EQA. also provides free consulting services to help individuals with their Accessibility Projects. People who wish to take advantage of this service should call 1-(613)-345-2038. While there is no cost or obligation for these services, providing them does cost money.

EQA. would be pleased to accept your donation to help with their "Accessibility Cause". EQA. is a Registered Charitable Organization, and receipts for tax purposes will be issued. Individual ($10.00) and corporate ($25.00) Memberships are also encouraged. Cheques can be sent to:
